Before you started jumping with elation, that deserts of Darfur will be turned soon into beautiful resorts, save your energy. That was years ago.
Using radar techniques scientists "reveal an ancient basin that once housed a mega-lake" in Darfur, dubbed the Northern Darfur Mega-lake. Maps of the ancient lake could help with groundwater exploration efforts in the Darfur region, where access to fresh water is both scarce and essential for refugee survival.
Then the question: The likelihood of groundwater to exist in huge amounts is almost certain, so why not explore it for groundwater to help these refugees and the people who live in Darfur? Indeed.
And then they will find oil . . .

Hey Black Kush, quite interesting they were using remote-sensing to find water, I think they were in fact looking for something else maybe.
Water is definitely of more importance for the people of Darfur, oil seems to be a curse these days.
Unfortunately, they were not searching for water! Just an incidental finding of the Mega-lake. Too bad about the oil...
hi Bk. I agree with commonsense oil is a curse these days. I mean common sense (the state of mind not the person who commented before me :) would say to explore for water because it is a basic life necessity, but darn politics and money interest always seems to rise above the benefit of the common man, especially in Africa. sigh
The curse? It reminds me of the cartoon movie "Wallace and Gromit: the curse of the Were Rabbit". We seem to think the curse is out there ie the oil and "Were Rabbits", but actually it is within ourselves, these dreadful drives to take all for ourselves and forgetting others.
Just like Wallace: instead of being the Rabbit catcher, he turned into a Rabbit himself, and a giant one at that!
