If the world were a village of 100 people...

I love demography! This is what the world would be like if it were a village of just 1oo people, with all existing human ratios remaining the same:

The village would have 60 Asians, 14 Africans, 12 Europeans, 8 Latin Americans, 5 from the USA and Canada, and 1 from the South Pacific

51 would be male, 49 would be female
82 would be non-white; 18 white
67 would be non-Christian; 33 would be Christian
80 would live in substandard housing
67 would be unable to read
50 would be malnourished
and 1 dying of starvation
33 would be without access to a safe water supply
39 would lack access to improved sanitation
24 would not have any electricity
(And of the 76 that do have electricity, most would only use it for light at night.)
7 people would have access to the Internet
1 would have a college education
1 would have HIV
2 would be near birth; 1 near death
5 would control 32% of the entire world’s wealth;
all 5 would be US citizens
33 would be receiving --and attempting to live on--
only 3% of the income of “the village”

And lastly, English is the most frequently studied language but most frequently SPOKEN language changes twice a day: when the Chinese get up, it is Mandarin; when they go to bed, it is English!

Interesting? Check out here what it would look like if the world were a village of 1000 people. Why not do that for your country. You will need the national statistics to reduce it to 1000 people! I am trying out for Sudan.

It just shows how uneven the wealth in the world is distributed! There is much out there for everybody if given out equally: not one of the 6 billion people in this planet will go hungry. But alas!

Americans control the world... Something to think about maybe.

It might be more accurate to say that 5% of the world's population CREATE 32% of the world's GDP.

After all, it's not like Microsoft or Intel or Cisco or Coca-Cola or Procter & Gamble etc. pp. were stolen from the (Red) Indians / "native Americans". No, those companies, as well as many others, were created through the ingenuity and enterprise of the American people. Nobody kept the Russians, the Chinese, the Indians, the Sudanese, the Hungarians, the Bolivians from coming up with splendid cars, MS-DOS, WINDOWS etc. It's just that they didn't think of it or/and make the necessary effort /sacrifices.

Wealth, contrary to many people's unthinking assumptions, is no zero-sum game. like: "you are wealthy, me not so much: therefore you must have deprived me." No, it can be created without depriving others or taking away from them. Don't let yourself slip into an envy mentality. That's not helpful either psychologically or economically.

By the way, I'm German, not American.

Regards, Michael

1 would have HIV

Are you saying that 1 in every 100 is HIV positive?
